The Learning Difficulties

What are the 3 Ds of Learning Difficulties?  

The '3 Ds' of Learning Difficulties are more intellectual challenges:

  • Dyslexia
    • Difficulty reading and spelling. 
    • Challenges with word recognition, fluency, spelling and comprehension
  • Dysgraphia
    • Difficulty with writing
    • Challenges with writing, spelling, organizing thoughts on paper
  • Dyscalculia
    • Difficulty with math
    • Challenges understanding number and mathematical concepts

There is 4th 'D' that affects physical abilities:

  • Dyspraxia
    • Difficulty with coordination
    • Challenges with motor skills such as balance and

Notice they all start with 'dys' meaning difficulty.  Each root portion of the word is derived from Greek or Latin ties.

  • Lexia means to read (Latin) and speech (Greek)
  • Graphia means writing (Greek)
  • Calculia means to count (Greek)
  • Praxia means action, doing, skilled movement (Greek)
